My Kid Loves K-Pop!
And I’m okay with that. Well…with a lot of K-pop, not ALL K-pop.
For those who might not know, K-pop is short for Korean popular music. Although there is some debate on whether it’s a genre (e.g. Jazz, Rap, Country, etc.) or a generic term for popular music that originated from South Korea. (Personally, I agree with the latter.)
In any case, K-pop is one of the earliest ways I introduced modern Korean culture to my kid. Somehow he quickly graduated from “Santoki” to Crayon Pop’s “Bar Bar Bar“. (They grow-up so fast!)
Although he still has no idea what they’re singing (that makes two of us), he still enjoys the melody and dancing (again, that makes two of us!). And my kid isn’t the only one. My non-Korean friend’s kid loves Psy’s “Gangnam Style.” For some reason, it would instantly calm him down mid-tantrum! Even though he had no idea what Psy was saying. They just enjoy the animated dancing, bright colors, and catchy tunes.
In a way, it’s good that my kid doesn’t understand the lyrics to K-pop songs, just in case they’re not PG, which they often are not. This way, I can listen to adult music but not have to worry about adult lyrics.
And I don’t know if he’s feeling his roots or what but I can’t seem to get him into American pop music. When he first showed an interest in K-pop, I thought “that’s great!” But I didn’t think he’d love ONLY K-pop.
I’d like to say that may be I have the next Rain on my hands, but unfortunately he’s got his mother’s sense of rhythm, which is to say none. Oh well….being a K-pop idol is a hard life anyway! They have grueling schedules and have to go on starvation diets!
